Discussion (6:30 pm): “Is it Good or Bad that the World has so Many Languages” with Dr. Jared Diamond
Join Jared Diamond for a short introduction to language diversity and multilingualism around the world, and raise the question whether society would be better off if we could agree on just one language. Would we as individuals be better or worse off going to the effort of learning several languages?
Jared Diamond, a professor of Geography at UCLA, is the author of well-known books for a broad public and translated into 38 languages, including The Third Chimpanzee, Guns Germs and Steel, Why Is Sex Fun?, Collapse, and Natural Experiments of History. Honors that he has received for his writings and research include the Pulitzer Prize, Britain’s Science Book Prize, the National Medal of Science, and election to the National Academy of Sciences. He is recognized for the breadth of his interests, which include research specialties in laboratory physiology, biogeography of New Guinea birds, and environmental history.

MATTHEW DEAR

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for Get Physical’s Body Language and the Fabric mix series. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.

Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated third album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

SONGODSUNS

Another name for Visionaries and Of Mexican Descent member 2Mex, Songodsuns first showed up in the mid-’90s when 2Mex and some friends, including DJ Nobody, got together to make a record. However, other commitments prevented an album from coming out, though a single, “Love Fights Back,” was released in 1999. Finally, between incessant touring, 2Mex was able to enlist help from producers Sa-Ra, KeyKool, Babu, Subtitle, and DJ Khalil, among others, and set about recording, using the moniker Songodsuns as a way to express his interest in other forms of music besides hip-hop (he admitted to being heavily influenced by They Might Be Giants, Elliott Smith, and the Cure). Over the Counter Culture, though it was definitely a rap album, boasted musical beats under 2Mex’s rough-voiced flow, and was issued on Up Above in 2005.

ANTHONY VALADEZ
Anthony Valadez is a Los Angeles based DJ/Producer and visual artist with residencies at Little Temple, Zanzibar and Federal Bar. His latest musical projects include remixes for David Bowie and Ozomatli. He has released two full length albums on indie label Recordbreakin. He is a resident DJ at Dublab.com and has a regular program on 89.9 FM KCRW and KCRW.com where he mixes future beats, soulful keys, and tomorrow’s samples and sounds. (www.anthonyvaladez.com)

ERIC J. LAWRENCE

Eric J. Lawrence is KCRW’s Music Librarian — a tough job, but someone has to know what lives among the 60,000 plus collection of CD’s and albums. He also hosts a music show, heard late-nights on Mondays at 89.9 FM and online at KCRW.com. An expert on German board games, EJL’s also a junk food aficionado and a master alphabetizer!

World AIDS Day – Decmeber 1st, 2011
Every day we work together towards the beginning of the end of AIDS, but World AIDS Day stands apart because of the enormous opportunity and efforts to raise global awareness and engage millions of people in the fight.

Whether this is your first World AIDS Day or your sixth, this year is unique. 2011 marks the 30^th anniversary of AIDS and we stand at a crossroads in the fight against AIDS, where the future – the near future – could hold the first AIDS Free Generation in thirty years.

Today at (PENFOLDS)^RED employees supporting World AIDS Day turned their attire ‘(RED)’ in a show of support. Tonight we will turn our attention to turning Ghirardelli Square ‘(RED)’ at Cellar360 in San Francisco.

Below is a list of some of the events going on today for World AIDS Day:

World AIDS Day Panel: The Beginning of the End of AIDS

On December 1^st (today), President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, Bono, Alicia Keys, and many more discussed the ‘Beginning of the end of AIDS’ on a historic live broadcast panel at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

People around the world have submitted questions on YouTube for the panel to address while exploring key issues around the global fight against AIDS, where we are today, and what it’s going to take to end this preventable disease for good.

(2015)QUILT

The (2015)QUILT is an innovative social media initiative designed to bring people from all over the world together to fight for a historic achievement –the delivery of the first AIDS free generation in more than 30 years. The quilt draws on the iconic AIDS Memorial Quilt launched in 1987, which became a symbol of awareness and empathy across the globe.

The Killers (RED)^TM Holiday Songs

Every year since 2006, The Killers have released an annual Christmas single for (RED) – featuring collaborations with Elton John, Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant, and Mariachi El Bronx – with proceeds from the sale of the songs going to fight AIDS.

This World AIDS Day, (2015)QUILT participants can get one of those songs for free when they add a pledge to their panel, choosing from ‘A Great Big Sled,’ ‘Don’t Shoot Me Santa,’ ‘Joseph, Better You Than Me,’ ‘Boots,’ ‘¡Happy Birthday Guadalupe!’ or this year’s song, ‘The Cowboy’s Christmas Ball.’ All songs can also be purchased on iTunes with proceeds going to the Global Fund.

Landmarks

True to an annual tradition, (RED) will be turning famous landmarks ‘(RED)’ on World AIDS Day. On December 1^st, cities around the world unite and illuminate landmarks red to honor World AIDS Day, including the Empire State Building in New York, The London Eye, the Sydney Opera House, the Dublin Mansion House, San Francisco City Hall, the Wrigley Building in Chicago, the CN Tower in Toronto and Table Mountain in Cape Town. In all, over 30 landmarks across dozens of global cities will be lit (RED). In San Francisco, Penfolds partner Cellar360 and 7×7 Magazine will be turning Ghirardelli Square ‘(RED)’.

At the heart of World AIDS Day is the family of (RED) Partners, working across markets and channels to raise awareness and funds through products, events and initiatives. Just a small sampling of the exciting partner activity planned for this year:

(BELVEDERE)^RED: You’ve likely seen the (BELVEDERE)^RED campaign featuring Usher on billboards, in magazines and in airports around the globe. Belve continues its support with the launch of (BELVEDERE)^RED Nights Out to celebrate World AIDS Day. Bars and nightclubs around the world will play host to a series of (BELVEDERE)^RED extravaganzas pre- and post- World AIDS Day, with marquis events at Art Basel on December 1^stand in London on December 7^th. Additionally Belve has collaborated with the Standard Hotel properties in the US, who will carry (BELVEDERE)^RED Special Edition Vodka in-room and at their bars for the entire month of December for AIDS awareness!

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (Oct. 10, 2011) – The Beverly Hills Film, TV & New Media Festival line-up of star-studded red carpet premieres, panels and honorary award recipients have been announced by Festival Director Donna Spangler. After an exceptional debut last year, this international event continues to be a true celebration of established and emerging talent and technologies in film, television and new media running from October 20-27, 2011.

The Opening Night Honorary Awards Ceremony will take place Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Roosevelt Hotel (7000 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood) benefiting The Finaza Foundation.
